IN STUDIO OR ON LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHS

When booking a session with a photographer, a client should consider what type of photo shoot they have in mind.  The type of shoot will often determine whether a studio or location shoot would be the best option.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY

A studio set up (whether in a studio or using a backdrop and studio lighting on location) is most suitable for Headshots and Portraiture, whether it be one person, a couple, or a family.  A studio offers perfect lighting set-ups to ensure polished images of the client.  Studios make use of professional lighting and light shapers, and in many cases reflectors, backdrops, and more than one light may be used.  If this sounds like jargon to you then don’t worry, all you would need to know is that a studio is equipped to provide the best lighting and backgrounds to give you a well-lit clean image; this equipment is often too cumbersome to take on-site.

A studio may also be used if there is likely to be inclement weather for a shoot.  A family shoot planned for a particular day in a beautiful outdoor setting may either need postponing or moved indoors.  Often the family members have set aside this time and are not able to change a date; this makes a studio a great back-up plan for these shoots.

OUTDOOR SHOOTS

Sometimes clients prefer a more natural setting with beautiful scenery, be it a beach, forest, or a beautiful garden.  Outdoor settings make family photographs relaxed and natural.  Engaged couples also tend to prefer outdoor settings – these are often romantic by nature and a pretty setting enhances the narrative.  Modeling and fashion shoots can be done on a street with city buildings as the backdrop which provide a grungier feel.

ON LOCATION – INDOOR SHOOTS

On-location photographs would usually be booked if a client would like business portraits at their place of business or branding images while at work.  In this instance we would bring the studio to you.  Although more complex, we would bring a smaller backdrop as well as studio lighting to a client’s business premises.  Space and a set-up time would need to be allocated to ensure perfect lighting during the shoot.

New-born photographs are often taken at home to allow the new parents and baby the comforts they may need to be relaxed.  Lighting is brought along to these shoots, but the backdrop is not usually required.  Many new parents want a natural home-style shoot that allows for beautiful, natural, candid photographs.

Weddings and events would of course be on-site, both indoors and outdoors.  Although artificial (studio) lighting is used, it is usually kept minimal to allow for natural moments and quick movement.

What are you planning for your next shoot?  Something edgy and modern on the streets, a tranquil forest setting or a traditional indoor portrait?
