I photographed my best friend’s wedding  in 1983; this was the start of a love affair with photography.  Being the “go-to” photographer for De Beers in Kleinzee and having the opportunity to photograph Mr Nicky Oppenheimer on numerous occasions also served to hone my portrait skills.

When I am not behind the lens you will find me reading -sometimes social media and at other times a thought-providing novel.  I have completed my first Afrikaans novel and have had a poem or two published already.  I enjoy walking, motorcycle touring and am always up for an excellent cup of coffee – usually somewhere quaint and interesting.

I endeavour to capture the essence of the people I photograph; taking a calm approach, resulting in beautiful, natural-looking portraits even when posing is required.

Being a nature lover, I can often be found walking trails searching for interesting flora and fauna; always hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “Rooikat” and any other wildlife that may be in the vicinity.

I am a fairly recent convert to the art of photography and spend a great deal of time behind my camera. I am told that my work exhibits sensitivity, insight and dexterity.  Being a hybrid shooter allows me to do both stills and video.

Emil's photographic career

As an accomplished photographer, my career has spanned over 3 decades.  I have had the privilege of photographing the likes of Mr Nicky Oppenheimer as well as the wedding of Simon & Estee Coetzer from Survivor SA.  A commission from the Mpumalanga Tourist Authority offered me the opportunity to photograph celebrities:  The late Xolani  Gwala, Zwai Bala as well as “Baby” from Generations (to mention a few) over a three weekend period.

I qualified as a teacher and spent most of my working life in a classroom, as well as being the Headmaster of 2 schools – one International and one South African.   I have since embarked on a full-time career in photography.   I believe this has given me credibility and developed my communication and report with both adult and child.  This comes in handy when photographing families, weddings  and portraits.

Behind the Scenes with lorraine

Although relatively new to video, I take delight in hybrid shooting which allows me to switch from stills to video in an instant.  As a second shooter, I generally capture behind the scenes footage.   It is gratifying to gift our clients with a short highlight video of their shoot.
