Photographing a creative person always results in an amazing photo shoot. Photographing a group of creative individuals, such as the Country band Rocking Horse was, therefore, a highlight for me.
Clive Ridgway of Rocking Horse approached me, as the band needed photographs for their new album, “I Don’t Like Country Music… I Love It!” We agreed that photographs would be taken in our photographic studio, as well as on location.
The day of the photo shoot arrived. I had already set up my lighting prior to the arrival of the band. I opted to use a Profoto B10X, along with a Profoto 4′ (130 cm) softbox light shaper and the Leica Profoto Connect Pro. My Leica SL2-S mirrorless camera, along with the tack sharp Leica Vario-Elmarit 28mm – 70mm f2.8 were my choice of camera and lens. This lens is pin sharp from f2.8 through to f22.
The in-studio photo session went off very successfully with much laughter and friendly banter. Now for the on-location photo shoot.
We piled into our cars, mine carefully packed with the Profoto and Leica photographic equipment, and drove off to the pre-determined destination.
The envisaged photographic shoot was to take place at a stunning location just outside Cape Town. Huge Blue gum trees lined the road on either side, casting their shadows across the road.
The idea was that the band would walk towards me, next to each other, with the two guitarists carrying their guitars in guitar cases. I would then trigger the Profoto B10X, illuminating the band sufficiently to lift any deep shadows on their faces.
The result was fantastic! They were extremely pleased with the photographs taken during the shoot, completed by half past eleven that morning. One of these photographs was selected for their Album Album cover, while others were used to promote the album on various social media platforms.
